Sofia Salazar Torres joined the CCWJ in 2022 as a Master of Science student in Welding Engineering. Previously, she was an intern with the Centre through the ELAP scholarship. She is developing a mathematical model for friction stir welding, calculating the hot-working threshold temperature ratio for FSW optimization processes and with it, estimating welding parameters. She was President of the University of Alberta AWS/CWA Student Chapter and a Secretary in 2023. Sofia has presented her research at prestigious conferences such as Fabtech, Canweld, and IIW. She also participated in the AWS Leadership Symposium in Miami.
Outside of academics, Sofia enjoys playing tennis, biking, and pottery painting.
